Although there are a large number of different types of solar water-heating systems, the basic technology is very simple. Sunlight strikes and heats an "absorber"
surface within a "solar collector". Either water, or a heat-transfer fluid, flowing through tubes, is heated. If additional heat is needed, it is provided by a backup conventional waterheating system.

Even with a conventional backup, a solar water heating system will typically reduce the use of electricity or fossil fuels by 50 to 80 percent.

The only additional thing needed is a valve to divert the water to the pool collectors.
